有些子囊的頂部是封閉的，沒有孔口，子囊孢子釋放時，子囊壁消解或破裂；有的頂部有孔口或狹縫或囊蓋，子囊孢子通過子囊頂部的孔口或狹縫釋放。有些子囊菌的子囊整齊地排列成一層，稱為子實層，有的高低不齊，不形成子實層。子囊大多產生在由菌絲形成的包被內，形成具有一定形狀的子實體，稱作子囊果（ascocarp)。有的子囊菌子囊外面沒有包被，是裸生的，不形成子囊果。子囊果有4種類型：子囊果包被是*封閉的，沒有固定的孔口稱作閉囊殼（cleistothecium)；子囊果的包被有固定的孔口，稱作子囊殼（perithecium)；子囊果呈盤狀的稱作子囊盤（apothecium)；子囊產生在子座組織內，子囊周圍不另外形成真正的子囊果壁，這種內生子囊的子座稱作子囊座（ascostroma)。寄生植物的子囊菌形成子囊果后，往往在病組織表面形成小黑粒或小黑點狀的病征。
